The History Of Shisha And The Hookah

The hookah has been a standard smoking utensil in the Middle East for centuries, originating in Turkey over 500 years ago. Although often popularized in the Western world for other things, the hookah has always been associated with tobacco smoking. The hookah has many names, including hooka, huka, nargile in Arabic, or shish or sheesha pipe. The hookah filters the smoke through water, making the end result much less harsh and allowing the flavor of the smoke to really come through.

The mix of tobacco combined with fruit molasses and honey used in a hookah, is known as shish or sheesha. It is also sometimes referred to as tabac or gouza. Shisha basically consists of fresh tobacco leaves, dried fruit, and flavored molasses.
